Animal coloration, morphology, and behavior

larvaeVolunteer positions are available to assist with field collection and lab research on projects related to marine larvae. Volunteers will gain experience in experimental design, image analysis, data analysis, microscopy, and animal husbandry

  • Coloration: What are the advantages and disadvantages of coloration? Very little is known about the coloration of planktonic organisms, and even less of marine larvae. Volunteers will assist with image analysis of Panamanian crab larvae as part of a greater project studying the impacts of ultraviolet radiation and predation on the coloration of these larvae.
  • Morphology: What is the relationship between morphology, life history, and biogeography? Volunteers will assist with a study of the morphology and defensive adaptations of larval crabs, and how these traits correlate with phylogeny. This will involve both image analysis and wet-lab predation experiments.
  • Behavior: How do marine larvae navigate near-shore currents while avoiding predators and finding sufficient food? Volunteers will assist in rearing crab and sea urchin larvae and in conducting lab experiments on the swimming and predator avoidance behaviors of these little-understood life stages.
