We are pleased to welcome Dr. Michael ‘Moose’ O'Donnell to the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute (CMSI) as our new Deputy Director, starting on July 15th, 2022.

Moose brings a wealth of experience to UC Davis.  After receiving his Ph.D. in 2005 from Stanford, where he studied how hydrodynamics of rocky shores shape marine organisms and communities, Moose was a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories and at UC Santa Barbara, adding to our growing understanding of the impacts of ocean acidification on marine invertebrates. He subsequently worked in science policy as a Senior Scientist at the California Ocean Science Trust, where he connected diverse constituencies of stakeholders, state agencies, and scientists to further coastal sustainability. For the past seven years, Moose has been the Executive Director of the Master of Translational Medicine, a graduate degree program at UC Berkeley and UCSF.

Many of us at CMSI already know Moose as a colleague, collaborator, and leader in advancing marine science and policy in California and beyond, and in developing experiential educational programs in the University of California that provide a diverse group of students with the tools to become future innovators. As Deputy Director of CMSI, and as CMSI moves into its second decade, we are especially fortunate to have Moose to inspire, coordinate, and diversify CMSI’s programs in research, education, and engagement, both on the UC Davis campus and at the Bodega Marine Lab (BML).
